The Cobra Power Inverter – A Winner

Power outages are becoming a more frequent problem these days, especially during the winter months and today when the focus is to go green I think going for a power inverter – rather than a generator in which you would have to cope with the fumes and the smell and not to mention the gasoline – is the recommended choice and the Cobra Power Inverter is a winner.

To be more specific the Cobra CPI 1575 1500 Watt 12 VoltDC to 120 Volt AC Power Inverter is what I would recommend. It is available at Amazon and I would recommend you buy it from them because they are a trusted name for one, and why not, when their price is almost always the best and also you can have it delivered to your doorstep instead of going to your local store when most often it may not even available there.

What the Power Inverter can be used for

What is it that you require to use – a flatscreen tv, a microwave, a laptop, external speakers, a coffee pot, a printer, a toaster – these are some pieces of equipment that can easily be hooked up onto the cobra power inverter without a problem. A normal house lamp with a 100 watt bulb can be run for about 30 minutes with almost no loss on battery power. Even a refrigerator which requires about 8 amps can be used for about an hour using a car at fast idle.

Some points to keep in mind

Just in case you are wondering – no, it cannot be plugged into your car cigarette lighter but has to be connected to a battery, preferably a car battery using cables.

The Cobra Power Inverter does not come with the required cables to hook it up to the battery. Someone in a review mentioned that he split a pair of heavy duty jumper cables that was lying around and used that. So keep in mind you may have to get the cable as well.

If the inverter is to be mounted at any distance from the battery, then instead of the #4 gauge cable a #2 gauge cable is recommended instead to avoid any drop in power to the inverter and then you can get full utilisation of the power needed.

What is not mentioned is that you require a 150 amp inline fuse to put in the power wire from the battery to the inverter and that needs to be purchased separately. Without this you will not be able to install the power inverter.

Another thing you may not know is that the remote switch has to be held down before the light indicates that the inverter is working, all of which takes about 2 seconds. A word of caution – sometimes it may be necessary to tape the jack of the remote hookup to the inverter as there is a tendency for the jack which is phone cord like to come off its snap clip as you run the wires.

Be very careful when connecting not to connect the Neutral and the Ground together at the panel as you will blow it up. It is best to try and figure it out properly and have a good understanding before you actually try to connect up.

The Cobra Power Inverter has a low input warning which works really great and if the need does arise it will shut down the inverter. Another great feature is that the meter enables you see how much power is being drawn by each appliance and as well as voltage readout so that you know when it is time to recharge the batteries.
